Behind The Art
“How did you get started doing this?” I am often asked. One answer is this story.
Years ago I was lettering a wall menu for a friend who was getting ready to open a sandwich shop. I had just finished one of the several menu items when everyone – plumbers, painters, electrician stopped for a morning break. Looking around for something to read while I drank my coffee, I picked up someone’s pocket New Testament. “ For I am persuaded” Paul said in his letter to the Romans “that neither death nor life… nor principalities nor powers … or any other creature shall be able to separate us from the love of God.”
I looked at the lettering I had just completed on the wall behind the counter “Blueberry muffins with cream cheese - 45¢”. Since the setting was a restaurant, perhaps I can be pardoned for referring to “a fork in the road”.
Anyway, I finished my work on the menu, but something had definitely changed. I wanted to use the alphabet to share messages like Saint Paul’s.
A couple of weeks later I was reading an article by a German graphic designer. “The scribe” he wrote “is the servant of the text.”
