Behind The Art
When I was a boy, my family owned sheep. Because of my memory of their defenselessness and their dependence on us for their care, this symbol of our relationship with God seems particularly well suited.
A friend of ours, a rancher, once pointed out that some animals – dogs, goats, horses, among others – if abandoned, have often been known to survive in packs, “going wild”. Abandoned sheep, on the other hand, he said, do nothing of the sort. They get lost and eventually perish.
An interesting footnote to this analogy is that a lost sheep, when found, instinctively, stubbornly resists rescue.
